Tutorial 1: Using the INCOSE SE Handbook to Engineer Complex Systems

The objective of this course is to provide a top-level overview of how the INCOSE Systems Engineering Handbook can be used to plan, manage, and realize complex systems within the context of demanding business constraints. Participants are introduced to key Systems Engineering concepts and principles in the handbook, answering questions such as:

  • What is Systems Engineering?
  • Why is Systems Engineering Important?
  • How does Systems Engineering engineer and manage complex systems that meet your stakeholder requirements?
  • How does Systems Engineering contribute to business results?


  • 10:30-12:30: Session I: Systems Engineering and Its Importance
  • 12:30-14:00: Lunch Break
  • 14:00-15:30: Session II: Key Systems Engineering Processes
  • 15:30-16:00: Coffee break
  • 16:00-17:30: Session III: Applying Systems Engineering on Complex Projects

David Walden

David D. Walden, ESEP, is co-owner and principal consultant for Sysnovation, LLC, a Systems Engineering consulting and education firm based out of Shakopee, Minnesota, USA. Previously, he was with General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems for 13 years and worked at McDonnell Aircraft Company for 10 years. Mr. Walden also serves as the INCOSE liaison to ISO/IEC JTC1/SC7 Working Groups 10 and 20 and has been a co-editor of the INCOSE SE Handbook since version 3.2. He has an M.S. in Management of Technology (MOT) from the University of Minnesota, an M.S. in Electrical Engineering and an M.S. in Computer Science from Washington University in St. Louis, and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Valparaiso University in Indiana. Mr. Walden was one of the first to earn the INCOSE Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) credential in 2004 and was awarded the INCOSE Expert Systems Engineering Professional (ESEP) credential in 2011.
